Should I be ashamed?
Absolutely not! In the past ten years, psychotherapy has become normalized. In fact, the Covid-19 Pandemic resulted in an unprecedented number of people seeking out one form of therapy or another including but not limited to faith based, play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, etc. to learn how to cope with after effects of Covid including but not limited to grief, loss, anxiety, substance use, domestic violence etc. the changes that resulted.
Culture plays a role in how one views therapy. Historically, some cultures attach sign of personal and/or spiritual weakness. However, more cultures are coming into the understanding that mental health is organic in nature, just as medical conditions.
